The Dreaded... Nursing Room
OK. So I may have an unpopular opinion here, but these nursing rooms are not helping out those of us who are trying to make 'Nursing in Public' a normal thing.
Don't get me wrong. These rooms are great for those who are not comfortable nursing in public, but they don't want to pump and bottle feed while out and about. Some women are just not comfortable with nursing in public at all and that's OK.
But for us who are comfortable with it and can do it discreetly even without a cover, these rooms don't serve us any justice. It's our job to make nursing in public a normal and accepted thing. Feeding our babies is natural, normal and should never looked down upon, ever. Whether you feed formula with a bottle, breast milk with a bottle or feed straight from the tap; a happy and well-fed baby is a pleasant baby that everyone can appreciate. So why does it matter how we feed that child?
The issue I see with Nursing Rooms is when someone feels uncomfortable being around someone nursing, they can "shoo" them off to this "heaven-sent" room. What are we telling everyone? That nursing in public is accepted and encouraged? NO. We are telling them that it is STILL unaccepted and is something that should be hidden away and locked in a closet.
I don't like that you're feeding your baby... so here, go to this room so you can be locked away from the public eye... But hey! It's better than a bathroom!
Right?!
NO!
I commend businesses who are making the accommodations for women who don't feel comfortable truly nursing in public. But for someone whose passion is to make it a publicly accepted form of feeding my child, this doesn't help.
Thankfully I was not told to go to this "nursing room" and feed my baby. Had I been told to, I would have informed them of my rights to breastfeed in public. But for the women who are told that they "have a nursing room to do that", it just discourages women to do what is natural for our babies. Breast feed... and breast feed where ever the damn well please.
Come on, America.
Until next time, friends
